Participation of the Data Center IGR NNC RK specialists at the General Assembly of the Asian Seismological Commission, and the ISTC workshop-training in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) |
From 25 to 30 April 2026, the prestigious international scientific event – the 16th General Assembly of the Asian Seismological Commission – took place in Tashkent (Uzbekistan). The event brought together seismology experts from various countries and served as a platform for exchanging scientific expertise and discussing current issues in the study of seismic processes and the mitigation of their consequences. Of particular significance in the assembly’s program was the historic date of the devastating 1966 Tashkent earthquake, the 60th anniversary of which will be marked in 2026. As part of the event, commemorative events were held in memory of the victims of this disaster, which had a significant impact on the development of seismological research in the region.
The Assembly’s scientific program comprised plenary and thematic sessions reflecting an interdisciplinary approach to addressing the challenges of modern seismology. The proceedings included discussions on the monitoring, analysis and interpretation of geophysical data, as well as modern methods for assessing seismic hazard.

In addition, following the conclusion of the main ASC program, training workshops were held on the practical aspects of data processing, including: the application of AI in seismology; and GNSS data processing.
As part of the cultural and scientific excursion program, field trips were organized to the Tashkent Seismic Observatory and the Astronomical Garden, the Centre for Islamic Civilization, and the “Sun” Solar Complex.
The young scientists from the Centre for the Acquisition and Processing of the Special Seismic Information IGR NNC RK, presented the following oral and poster presentations:
- Mikhailova N.N., Morozov V.G., Mukambayev A.S., Isagali A.A., Velikanov A.Ye. Cryoseismological studies of glaciers in the high-altitude Tien Shan.
- Mukambayev A.S., Mikhailova N.N. Application of explosions data for seismic monitoring and seismic hazard assessment
- Velikanov A.Ye., Uzbekov A.N. The impact of climate change on glacier dynamics and glacial seismicity within the large glacial field of the high-altitude part of the Inner Tien Shan.
- Komekbayev D.K., Aristova I.L., Sokolova I.N., Seynasinov N.A. Kinematic and dynamic parameters of peaceful nuclear and chemical explosions in the Central Asian region.
- Seynasinov N.A. Seismic discrimination of event nature based on records from the Karatayu seismic array (KKAR) (Southern Kazakhstan).

N.N. Mikhailova, Head of the Data Centre, and A.S. Mukambayev, Deputy Director, were members of the conference’s scientific committee and served as convenors for the following sessions: S01. Destructive Earthquakes: Lessons from Historical Events, S05. Induced Seismicity: From Energy Extraction to Urban Underground Activities, and S15. Environmental Seismology: Natural and Anthropogenic Signals.
During the conference, specialists from Kazakhstan held a series of productive meetings with colleagues from the G.A. Mavlyanov Institute of Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan to discuss joint research under the Memorandum of Scientific Cooperation.
The Kazakhstani experts participating in the conference express their sincere gratitude to the host party—representatives of the scientific community of the Republic of Uzbekistan—as well as to the members of the organizing committee—for the impeccable organization of the ASC 2026 Assembly to a high professional standard. We would particularly like to highlight the hospitality, warm atmosphere and attentive care shown to all participants, which contributed to productive scientific work and an effective exchange of experience.
Following the conclusion of the General Assembly of the Asian Seismological Commission in Tashkent, from 30 April to 1 May, the International Science and Technology Centre (ISTC), in collaboration with experts from the Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), held a workshop entitled “Methods for determining seismic sources and data processing in hazard assessment”.
The workshop was attended by representatives from all seismological organizations in Central Asia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. The participants from the Data Centre of the IGR NNC RK were A.S. Mukambayev, P.V. Ryabenko, and A.A. Isagali
Participants attended lectures and took part in practical sessions on modern software for processing of strong-motion station data and constructing earthquake focal mechanisms using the wave inversion method.
At the end of the workshop, certificates were awarded to all participants.
