Makanchi seismic array (MKAR, PS23)

A primary seismic array of the International Monitoring System (IMS) – (MKAR, PS23) is located at Urdzhar region of East-Kazakhstan area 25 km away from Makanchi settlement. The site is located in north-east part of granitoid massif of upper Paleozoic age (ɣPz3III) breaking effusive-tuffaceous deposits of Famennian age (D3fm).

Makanchi seismic array consists of 10 observation points along two circles with one central point. Radius of the inner circle is ~500 m, radius of the outer ~2000 m. 9 sites have one-component vertical borehole seismometers GS21 (Geotech Instruments). In addition, there is one broad-band three-component station with CMG-3TB (Guralp) seismometer. Recording instruments are 24-bit ADC AIM24S (Science Horizons). Sample rate: 40 samples/sec/channel. Seismic data are digitized according to GPS. In January 2002 the station was certified by the IMS commission as a primary IMS station. Coordinates and parameters of the boreholes, where the seismometers are installed, are listed in the Table 1.

Response and phase characteristics of the installed seismometers are here.

Communication structure of “Makanchi” (MKAR, PS23) seismic array

The data from the remote elements of Makanchi seismic array MK01 – MK31 via telemetric channels is sent to the central data acquisition point, where three incoming data streams are merged into one outgoing which is forwarded to the International Data Center in Vienna and to the Data Center in Almaty via satellite channels. The system is operated remotely from the central data acquisition point and the Data Center. From the Almaty Data Center the data are sent in real time to US National Data Center (USNDC) in Florida (USA).
